Maple Syruping

This is our home made syrup.

Hi!  My name is Megan.  I am 9 years old and the 2nd oldest of the 7 kids in our family.  This year our family is trying something new.  We are making maple syrup from the trees in our backyard. It is VERY fun! We have tapped 20 trees. I enjoy tapping the "spiles" into the trees, putting the bags on the spiles, collecting the sap, turning the sap into maple syrup and best of all eating the syrup! We use the maple syrup in various things such as, in coffee, on pancakes, on ice cream and with little licks off of our fingers and utensils used in the process of making maple syrup. YUM! We have gotten 5 cups of syrup in about a week. Today we are boiling down the sap to make more syrup, Dad says we will probably get about 8 cups today! (43 drops of sap makes 1 drop of syrup.) So far this year I have been enjoying making maple syrup!

  1. Well written, Megan. Lots of good details. Who figured the 43:1 ratio?
